Ateshgah Temple – The temple of fire worshippers Ateshgah is located at the Absheron peninsula at the outskirts of Surakhani village 30 km from the centre of Baku and was revered in different times by Zoroastrians, Hindus and Sikhs. This territory is known for such unique natural phenomena as burning natural gas outlets (underground gas coming onto the surface contacts oxygen and lights up). The temple in its present state was constructed in the 17th-18th centuries. It was built by the Baku-based Hindu community related to Sikhs. The pentagonal complex has an open courtyard with temple-altar in the center which was the place of pilgrimage for worshippers.
Yanardag is a live explanation of why Azerbaijan is called Land of Fires. There are many historical and natural monuments associated with the natural ignition of gas on the surface of the earth. Yanar Dag and Ateshgah are clear examples of such monuments. The historical cultural and natural reserve “Yanardag” is located 25 km to the northeast of Baku near the village of Mammadli on the Apsheron Peninsula. Here you can observe an interesting natural phenomenon – the ignition of natural gas at the foot of the hill.
